Prince William and his wife Kate came out of London’s St Mary’s hospital this week with a new bundle of joy. His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, The third in line to the throne, who was born on Monday.

The young family’s first public appearance together has been the moment that the world’s media and crowds of onlookers camped outside the hospital had long been waiting for, and the photographs snapped Tuesday are likely to be reprinted for decades as the baby grows into adulthood and his role as a future king.

With all the publicity going on about the royal baby, it should not escape our attention that one of the best generators in the world also originates from the same region, so it is easy to conclude that it is indeed part of “royal generation”. The lister petter diesel generators are designed for continuous duty in a wide range of power supply applications. powered by various models of dependable and efficient air and water cooled Lister engines, the generators are skid mounted on anti-vibration mounts and include an integral fuel tank with contents gauge.

Hand start models are basic units supplied with engine mounted fuel tank and without integrated control panel and are especially suitable for powering of pumps in remote sites. Generator control and monitoring accessories should be either separately provided or integrated with the pump control panel.

Electric start models are supplied in open specification with acoustic canopies available as an option. Fitted with each generator is a control cubicle featuring an AC output circuit breaker , emergency stop button, automatic battery charger and a solid state control module, This provides automatic shutdown in the event of low engine oil pressure, high engine temperature, over/under speed and start failures with warning indicators provided for these conditions. In addition the control module gives digital read out of voltage, phase current, output frequency , engine speed, battery voltage, engine hours run and engine coolant temperature (LLD only).Lister generators are of heavy duty design and suitable for continuous operation. They are robust and efficient and provide an ideal solution to all standby and off grid power supply requirements.

The Davis & Shirtliff C.E.O Mr. Alec Davis and the technical Director Mr .Philip Holi inspecting an Ultra-filtration plant with clients

As means off treating water continue to evolve every single day it cannot escape our attention to mention the recent developments in ultra-filtration which enable a state of the art water purification system capable of removing particles, bacteria, some viruses and even protozoa. Davis & Shirtliff the leading water and energy solutions provider led by the group C.E.O Mr. Alec Davis will today be launching this officially in the Kenyan market, an event that is bound to be a game changer in the water treatment industry.

Ultra Filtration (UF) is a highly effective treatment process to clarify turbid and polluted water to a high quality potable condition. It uses a large number of small bore capillaries with an outside-in flow configuration and with pore sizes of about 0.02 micron will remove particles and high molecular weight substances, colloidal materials and organic and inorganic polymeric particles.

It is therefore particularly suitable for the treatment of polluted surface waters from dams, rivers, reservoirs etc. as well as waste water recovery The process will not remove dissolved solids including sodium, calcium and chlorides and so is less suited to the treatment of ground water with high salt levels. Ultra filtration is a full flow recovery process and contaminants are removed by air scouring and backwashing, periodically with a chemical cleaning agent, the process being fully automated using solenoid valves.

The heart of the system is the pressurized UF module and various system sizes can be provided by combining modules in parallel. Systems are frame mounted and supplied as complete units with all necessary accessories and controls for simple integration with the flow process. They offer the following features:-

• High efficiency GE or DOW ultra-filtration membranes.

• Fully automated plant operation including normal filtration cycle, 2 backwash cycles, rinse and forward flush cycles as well as providing various alarms in case of system malfunction. The various cycles are controlled by an integral PLC controller.

• High efficiency Davey or Pedrollo feed, backwash and cleaning pumps

• Integrated cleaning, air scour and backwash systems and two chemical dosers for chlorine and a cleaning agent

• System monitoring instruments including inlet and outlet flow meters and pressure gauges.

• 150 micron pre-filter.

• Skid mounted for simple installation.

Dayliff Ultra Filtration Systems provide a high performance, high efficiency treatment process that produces fully potable water without chemical additions. The process uses low energy consumption and provides consistent quality without frequent operational intervention. Due to the efficiency of the membranes it also offers considerable economies over conventional systems and is the ideal solution where ever pure, portable water is required.

In the wake of what has transpired recently in the Kethi Kilonzo saga where the IEBC dispute resolution committee chaired by Thomas Letangule barred her from contesting amid a back drop of mysterious circumstances, Most Kenyans are wondering what next for the brilliant lawyer.

Her political debut was something the people of Makueni eagerly supported and in fact she was a favorite to clinch the senatorial seat that was left vacant after the demise of her father, the late Senator Mutula kilonzo. However things took a different turn when she was tasked to explain where she had registered, how she registered with expired documents and why she used photocopies instead of original documents and an explanation that could appease the tribunal did not materialize.

The registration slip in her possession was also said to have been stolen from a booklet that had been used to register retired President Kibaki only during the launch of the registration exercise and was a subject of police investigation.

This kind of dilemmas reminds us of the various power solutions we offer to our clients every day and if only it could apply to the Kethi Kilonzo situation, a power back up system! The people of Makueni would still have their hearts’ desire. Dayliff Power Backup Systems are specifically designed for small domestic and commercial applications and provide standby power in the event of mains power supply failure. They can be used as an alternative to a generator and have many advantages including:-

· Instantaneous and automatic changeover when the mains power fails which is especially beneficial when used with electronic equipment such as computers and TV’s.

· Totally silent and non-polluting operation which particularly suits enclosed space applications.

· Very low running costs – just the power to charge a battery.

It has indeed been a crazy week for the government with the teacher’s strike in motion and KNUT unyielding in their demands. The value teachers offer this country can be undermined in many ways by different groups of people but the fact remains that they have our children in their custody for most of the day while we are out there in our places of work trying to eke out a living, so then it is only in order that they should be rewarded in a way that is commensurate with the effort they put in and the responsibility bestowed upon them.

This is not to say that we are in way advocating for the teachers strike but simply trying to show that sometimes we need to rethink the way we approach matters, things or people that we take for granted can actually be the point of breakthrough that we have always wanted as a people or community.

Consider one of the smallest pumps, a pedrollo PKM60, it is small in size but the boosting capacity is phenomenal. It is robust, reliable and economical pump used principally for water transfer in domestic and small scale water transfer applications. The pump body is made from cast iron with a brass insert set into the front housing for improved starting performance and protection from jamming. The impeller is made from brass. In addition. The additional benefits of this pump are;

• Quiet operation due to the anti-vibration system between shaft and impeller
• More compact
• More efficient motor with low energy consumption and lower operating temperature.
• Special paint which gives improved resistance against environmental corrosion
• Longer life

Pedrollo PKM60 Pump

The conclusion is simply the fact that lets learn to appreciate the small things in life, even the PKM60!
