German manufacturer of solar inverters SMA Solar Technology AG has picked Davis & Shirtliff to distribute its products across the East African Community market. Speaking yesterday while signing the deal, SMA managing director, Thorsten Ronge said the move is aimed at tapping into the nascent but potential market for its solar products.

“SMA is a manufacturer and supplier of solar inverters for photovoltaic systems with electricity grid connection, off-grid power supply and backup operations. Together with Davis & Shirtliff, the partnership we hope will offer innovative key technologies for future power supply,” he said. The announcement comes at a time when the country’s electricity access is considered low despite the government’s ambitious target to increase electricity connectivity from the current 15 per cent to at least 65 per cent by the year 2022.

There have been similar partnerships in the recent past between local firms and international-based companies eager to cut down on their power bills by adopting solar solutions with the later keen to take advantage of the existing market gap. Currently, the country has an installed power capacity rate of 57 per cent of hydro power, 32 per cent of thermal and the rest comprises geothermal and emergency thermal power, while solar PV and Wind power contribute less than one per cent to the national grid.
